Editor: My name is Christina Walker. I am in Grade 9 at Joseph H. Kerr School in Snow Lake. My class is concerned about the HIV/AIDS epidemic going on in Africa. HIV is a virus that can be passed on through blood, or breast milk from an infected person. This virus weakens the immune system, so that when other viruses invade the body they can't be destroyed. AIDS is one of these viruses. A person infected with HIV usually has up to ten years before they get AIDS, but in resource-poor countries like Africa, they can have as little as five. This is from the lack of drugs available, poor dieting, and other unhealthy habits. If there were more drugs available to the people of Africa, a lot more deaths would surely be prevented. We have created an HIV/AIDS Awareness Week, involving various awareness and fundraising events, to raise money to send to Africa through World Vision. We hope to inspire other communities to follow in our footsteps. Thank you for your time, Christina Walker On behalf of the Senior 1 Social Studies class Joseph H.
