Flin Flon school enrollment is below 1,000 for the first time since perhaps the 1930s. Do we still need four schools?

Trevor Miller If the only thing going on at our community schools was classes, the decline in enrollment might be cause to think about cutbacks in facilities. But with things like daycare, nursery school and university courses utilizing space in our school buildings, it's about more than just students registered in the division. While Creighton opening its high school certainly had an impact on Flin Flon's, there are other ways to make up the shortfall besides folding Hapnot and Many Faces into the same building. Doreen Murray The school division is supporting an infrastructure that was put in place for a much larger population than exists today. Though a bit early to consider one less school, if the population continues to decline, the choice becomes obvious. Ratepayers have faced substantial increases to their property taxes and further increases to water and hydro, and have faced hikes in education taxes. There comes a time when enough is enough and the division may have to look at a possible school closure to contain rising costs. Parents want the best education for their children; however, tough times call for tough measures and I wish the division luck as they grapple with the enrollment drop. Ken Mansell We need our three traditional schools where they are for as long as we can. However, I think it is time for Many Faces students to return to Hapnot. There is plenty of room there. The cost of maintaining another building mere feet away from Hapnot makes no sense. The program used in Many Faces can be maintained and possibly made even better with more students to share staff and facilities. The school division budget exceeds the City of Flin Flon's by $1.91 million and yet the city cannot refuse to accept the school division's budget. I cannot understand why there is no collaboration on this.
