Cal Huntley is the next mayor of Flin Flon. How did he do it and what’s your reaction?

What do YOU think?

Trevor Miller
Personally, I didn’t see a great deal of difference in platforms, and both mayoral candidates ran solid campaigns; I think the results spoke as much about the divided climate in city politics.
With only seven candidates for six council positions, the divide in the electorate had only one place to be expressed, giving us the narrowest result anyone could have expected.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Mr. Huntley will bring to council, and congratulations to Mr. Fontaine on a well-run campaign.

Cal’s ideas on the more contentious issues facing Flin Flon, as well as his background in human resources, may well have won him the race.
His take on the cottagers’ situation also made sense. Cool heads and the right approach to the problems could well win the day. Everyone wants to do the right thing. It just takes diplomacy.
His intent to lobby government hard for seniors’ housing, and not take no for an answer, was also convincing.
Though it is still early days, I am encouraged by his positive attitude where the future of Flin Flon is concerned, and wish him the best.

A very slight majority wanted change, though Cal is no stranger to local politics. He has avoided controversies that Mayor George Fontaine and council have stirred up over the last four years.
I respect George for his attempt to level the field for paying the bills; however, some citizens do not think it’s fair. I wonder what approach the new mayor and council will take.
Mr. Huntley states, “One of the strengths I believe I bring to the table is the ability to build relationships.” This may be why he beat out the incumbent, but with a margin of four votes it is too close to tell.
