It may be hard to believe, but another year will soon be over. These past 365 calendar squares have been eventful, just as we in the newspaper business like them to be. Next Wednesday, The Reminder will unveil our choices for the top news stories of 2006. For now, I'd like to comment on a handful of "smaller" stories from throughout the year. They may not have made the biggest headlines, but they are worth further reflection nonetheless. Perfect Fit When I learned that Crystal Kolt had been named the new cultural coordinator of the Flin Flon Arts Council, I was hardly surprised. Mrs. Kolt's passion and talents are undeniable. We have some extremely talented artists in our communities, and she will certainly help a burgeoning arts scene further blossom. Talk about a perfect fit. Power of the Press When former residents Jasen Bellamy and Rhonda Gauthier came home to wed over the summer, they expected to have the time of their young lives. Unfortunately, an unknown thief had other ideas. Late in the night, someone swiped the couple's priceless wedding photos from a parked van. Fortunately, a friend of the family contacted The Reminder. A story soon appeared and, amazingly, the pictures were turned over to the RCMP. It was a great example of the press and the public joining forces to bring forth a happy ending. Breakfast Time For years the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce has sought ways to bring fresh voices to its table. The result was a special breakfast meeting in early December that replaced the traditional noonhour get-togethers. The experiment was a success, as several new faces turned out. And as one attendee commented, the chamber hadn't sparked so much discussion in a long, long time. Such meetings are crucial if the business community is to move forward, as a single unit, on exciting new initiatives. Hopefully the trend started by that early morning meeting (reeeeally early for some of us) continues. Positive Sign At its annual meeting, North of 53 Consumers Co-op announced it had climbed out of the red to turn a small profit. It's no secret that the Flintoba Shopping Centre has proven to be a major challenge not only for the Co-op, but Main St. as a whole. The Co-op's turnaround is a positive sign, proof that uptown stores can adapt and continue to succeed in this new retail era. War Brides Honoured Over the summer, the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, in partnership with the Legion, hosted a special dinner to commemorate the Flin Flon area's remaining war brides. These wonderful women have contributed so much to our communities. They've raised families, donated their time to worthy causes, and blessed us with greater diversity. The Legion is to be commended for recognizing them. In closing, I'd like to thank our readers and advertisers for their continued support and encouragement this past year. Without you, there would be no Reminder. All the best in 2007, everybody! Local Angle runs Fridays.
