A fire north of Flin Flon has more than doubled in size in the past two days.

The fire, located north of Kisseynew Lake, is still categorized as “out of control” by Manitoba Sustainable Development and “not contained” by Saskatchewan Wildfire Management.

As of 1 pm Friday, Wildfire Management listed the estimated size of the fire as 720 hectares, up from 325 hectares on Wednesday.

Two other fires in northern Saskatchewan, both within 100 kilometres of Flin Flon, were also considered “not contained.” A fire located near Granite Lake had expanded to 550 hectares, while a fire northwest of Jan Lake now had an estimated size of 672 hectares. Lightning strikes caused for all three fires, according to Wildfire Management.

Another smaller fire located near Pelican Lake is also considered not contained. The fire has an estimated size of two hectares.

Fewer fires have been reported on the Manitoba side of the provincial border.

One fire classified as “out of control” was burning less than three kilometres south of The Pas. The fire started as a result of a lightning strike on August 10 and is an estimated 0.3 hectares.

Two smaller fires are also burning south of Simonhouse Lake and south of the east end of Kisseynew Lake. Each were listed as “under control” by Sustainable Development as of 1 pm Friday.

Wildfire Management listed 48 active fires in Saskatchewan as of Friday, with seven of them “not contained.” In all, 113 active fires were burning in Manitoba.
