Roof repairs at Ruth Betts Community School will be finished next spring, but the delay will not make an impact on the Flin Flon School Division’s (FFSD) bottom line.

Secretary treasurer Heather Fleming gave a full report to school board trustees during the board’s Nov. 27 meeting, discussing the state and finances of the project.

“We’re almost done. There’s a little bit left that has to be done in the spring, along with the last inspection,” said Fleming.

The board gave first reading to a bylaw requesting $863,700 from the provincial ministry of education, the third such payment to be issued in relation to the project.

When the roof project was first announced, more than $2 million was devoted to the project, with the total to be paid back to the division by the provincial ministry over the course of construction.

“That is the total for right now. This is our third debenture and third promissory note for the project. We have one more coming. The project was just over $2 million,” said Fleming.

“We finance it up front and the government reimburses us.”

Fleming also confirmed that work on École McIsaac School and Hapnot Collegiate will start next year after spring melt, adding that the cost of the projects will not lead to issues for the division’s bottom line.

“It’s not going to affect us at all. They’re just flowing the money through to us. It’s not part of our operating budget. These are capital projects at the provincial government level,” she said.

Early bird payout

Teachers hoping to leave or retire from the school division can earn some extra money if they file their papers soon.

The school approved offering two different rewards for teachers who give advance notice of plans to leave the division. A teacher who notifies the division before Jan. 18 will receive $1,000, while a separate reward of $500 will be sent to teachers who file between Jan. 18 and Mar. 15.

Budget survey

The school board wants to hear from the public before drafting the division’s next budget.

An online survey regarding the upcoming budget will be posted to the school division website. The division had a similar open consultation on its website last year.

“For people who aren’t good with things electronically or don’t have access to it, we do have paper copies on the school division website,” said Fleming.

To participate, visit the website at www.ffsd.mb.ca. A link to the survey will be found on the website’s home page.
