Northern Saskatchewan's outbreak of COVID-19 continues to grow, with 13 new cases reported across Saskatchewan and 12 reported within La Loche.

Only one new case, reported in the north region, was announced as being from outside La Loche. There are currently 203 active cases of the disease in Saskatchewan and 544 cases have been reported since the outbreak began.

The Saskatchewan government announced six new recoveries from the disease today.

"We continue to provide significant resources and make every effort to work with community leaders in La Loche and throughout the north to control the spread of COVID-19," said Scott Moe in a preamble to a May 8 press conference on newly released Statistics Canada unemployment numbers.

"I want to thank everyone involved in this effort for the great work they are doing in what is a very challenging situation."

Since the La Loche outbreak began, 141 positive tests have been reported in La Loche, along with several at the nearby Clearwater River Dene Nation.

Provincial health authorities discussed what may or may not qualify as an "outbreak" under public health language, adding what may be considered an outbreak varies by where cases are reported. An outbreak at seniors' facilities is declared once one case is reported.

One of the five outbreaks in Saskatchewan, at Prince Albert's Victoria Hospital, was announced as ended by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) May 8. No further cases at the hospital among staff or patients have been reported since an inpatient tested positive April 30.

"This is a definite testimony to diligent PPE use and good environmental maintenance by all the teams,” said Dr. Khami Chokani, SHA medical health officer in a press release.

The provincial government will provide information on outbreaks in SHA facilities inclduing hospitals and seniors' homes, correctional facilities or anywhere else the disease may be considered a public risk.

Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan government announced some changes to the provincial Reopen Saskatchewan plan, adding in guidelines for drive-in theatres, farmers markets, thrift and secondhand stores, golf courses and boat usage. All Saskatchewan residents will need to maintain compliance with existing public health orders.
