The physician assistant at the Flin Flon Clinic will be leaving after an organizational change removed the assistant’s supervisor.

Jan Drutz, the physician assistant at the Flin Flon Clinic, will be leaving the clinic Jan. 24 after a change within the Northern Health Region (NHR) butted the clinic up against a provincial medical standard.

As a physician assistant, Drutz has to be supervised by a licensed physician under guidelines laid down by the College of Physician and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM). No physicians currently working with the NHR are able to supervise Drutz, meaning the physician assistant’s job is now unable to be fulfilled.

“In accordance with the College of Physician and Surgeons of Manitoba, physician assistants are required to work under a licensed physician to practice in Manitoba,” explained a spokesperson for the NHR.

“Unfortunately, there are no licensed physicians willing to supervise a physician assistant in the Flin Flon Clinic at this time. Therefore, Jan Drutz, as a physician assistant, will no longer be able to work at the Flin Flon Clinic as of Jan. 24, 2020.”

The spokesperson confirmed the clinic will continue to operate following Drutz’s departure.

“The NHR would like to take this opportunity to thank Jan for providing dedicated, quality care to the residents of Flin Flon and throughout our region.  We wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” said the spokesperson.
