It’s been to Florida, New York, California and everywhere in between. Now the National Football League’s championship trophy is coming to Flin Flon.

The Vince Lombardi Trophy will be in Flin Flon this Saturday, Nov. 12. The sterling silver trophy, awarded annually to the winner of the Super Bowl, will be on public display at Canadian Tire.

“It’s going to stay here so long as there are people taking pictures with it,“ said Mario Delarosbil, associate dealer for Flin Flon’s Canadian Tire store.

“It’s going to be a big and great event here in town.”

The Lombardi trophy was first awarded to the NFL champions nearly 50 years ago. The trophy that will be on display Saturday is the same trophy that will be given to the winners of Super Bowl LI, to be played Feb. 5 in Houston, Texas.

“We’re going to have a lot of fun,” said Delarosbil. “Unfortunately, we’re not allowed to touch it. There’s going to be a very high amount of security around that trophy.”

Personnel from the NFL and various corporate sponsors will be on hand to give speeches and meet the public. The Creighton Kodiaks football team will also be part of the event.

The trophy is rarely shown publicly outside the US, but it was brought north of the border earlier this year for a short tour through Montreal, Regina, Hamilton and Vancouver. Saturday will mark the trophy’s first time in Flin Flon.

“I don’t think the NFL people knew exactly where Flin Flon was,” joked an excited Delarosbil. “I know they had called a few people here to help them find it on the map. I guess a lot of people will be talking about Flin Flon now.”

Flin Flon was one of three Canadian sites selected to host the trophy for this tour. The trophy will be making stops in
Olds, Alta., and Edmonton before heading back to the US.
