In an early March news release, Cst. Randy Wittig of the Snow Lake RCMP Detachment welcomed new constable Todd Sear to the local unit. Advising that Sear started work on February 21, filling a vacancy left when Cst. Kevin Mantie left for a posting in Ashern in October of 2005. Wittig further advised that local police conducted two recent patrols with Manitoba Conservation. These excursions resulted in two charges of failing to register snowmobiles under the Off Road Vehicle Act and one charge of fishing with too many lines. "Additionally, police responded to two domestic disturbances, received a report of theft of firewood, and executed a warrant of arrest on a person who failed to show up for court," stated Wittig. "In relation to the theft of firewood, the culprits have been identified and the issue is being resolved informally," he added. Wittig also served up a reminder to all snowmobilers and ATV operators that the section of the Chisel Lake railbed currently owned by Foran Mining Co. is closed for public use. He noted that No Trespassing signs are in place and police have been instructed to charge (with trespassing) anyone who doesn't have authorization to be on the property. On the subject of snowmobiles, the Snow Lake SnoDrifters Snowmobile Club held radar runs on Snow Lake March 17. Finally getting enough good ice on the lake has meant that it's been a very busy month for the club. The winners of this annual event were: 500 Stock Ð Brian Shapka, 139 kph, Denis Hart Ð 123 kph, Robert Stoupe Ð 116 kph, Jace Ryan Ð 107 kph. 600 Stock Ð Mark Gogal Ð 149 kph, Denis Hart Ð 149 kph; 700 Stock Ð Ron Byblow Ð 163 kph, Denis Hart Jr. Ð 153 kph, Denis Hart Sr. Ð 147 kph. 900 Stock Ð Blair Stoupe 164 kph. 500 Modified Ð Chris Chell Ð 147 kph. 700 Modified Ð Brian Shapka Ð 155 kph. 800 Modified Ð Robert Stoupe - 176 kph. 900 Modified Ð Robert Stoupe Ð 176 kph. Open Modified Ð Mike Kelly Ð 209 kph. All these races were run on a 1,500-foot track that was laid out and groomed over the previous weeks. The weather was sunny and warm which made for some optimum runs and viewing. Town News In Town news, a call went out in mid-February asking for suggestions on a name for the community's newest cottage subdivision. There were only two names submitted for the new development, and they were read out at the Town Council's March 21 meeting. The names were: Samborski Shore Estates and Vikers Bay. Citing that the development will be on the shore of Wekusko Lake's Vikers Bay, the council opted to go with the latter suggested name. As a result, the new development will henceforth be known as the Vikers Bay Cottage Subdivision. In a corresponding matter, the town's Community Development Officer (CDO) reported that there are 56 people interested in lots in the Vikers Bay Subdivision. The CDO added that she has fielded several requests for maps of the area and queries about the availability of power during the construction period. The CDO further informed the council about the progress being made on the community's website and the idea of posting local properties for sale on the town's site, then in turn having the town's web address listed on the "For Sale By Owner Ð Canada" website.
