Flin Flon will host the province’s biggest mine rescue competition this week.

The Manitoba Provincial Mine Rescue Competition (MPMRC) will be held May 24 and 25 at 777 mine, with members of mine rescue teams from across the province taking part in a series of skills competitions and testing.

The competition will start at 8 a.m. May 24 with an underground competition. A written exam is scheduled to take place later in the day.

On May 25, participants will undergo a firefighting competition alongside events for technician training and practical skills. A final awards banquet will take place at 6 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall.

Since 1961, the MPMRC has been held annually at a Manitoba-based mine. Last year, four teams took part, including mine rescue teams from Hudbay operations in both Flin Flon and Snow Lake, Vale from Thompson and the Tanco Mine located in southeast Manitoba. The Snow Lake team, captained by Bob Forsyth, won the event and earned the right to represent Manitoba in a Western Canadian mine rescue competition this fall.
