"In light of the recent activity highlighted in the media over the past week, Mayor Cal Huntley, Mayor Bruce Fidler and Mayor Carl Lentowicz would like to reach out to the residents of the region and make a unified statement in regards to the recent announcement by Hudbay on the future predicted closure of its Flin Flon operations.
The City of Flin Flon, the Town of Creighton and the Northern Village of Denare Beach have been working together for a very long time to create solid relationships between the communities. We are working toward a lifelong partnership to move forward and work together to ensure the future of the economy.
In 2017, our three municipalities decided to collaborate to create the FDC Regional Economic Development Commission with the objective to create a more diversified and active economy.
The Commission is an interprovincial-municipal entity that encompasses the City of Flin Flon, the Town of Creighton and the Northern Village of Denare Beach. We are the first and only interprovincial-municipal economic development commission in Canada.
We, as the leaders, stand strong together and speak on behalf of our communities to ensure that we are united as one, and that we continue to work hard to ensure economic prosperity for our region.
We will continue to focus our efforts in 2019 on ensuring that we minimize the impact that will be caused to the economy by the announced closure of Hudbay’s Flin Flon facility while maximizing opportunities for diversification and increased services. In early 2019, the three councils will be signing a memorandum of understanding to ensure longevity and sustainability for the FDC Economic Development Initiative."
