Manitoba has hit a new high water mark in public vaccinations. More than three-quarters of all eligible Manitobans have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while more than 50 per cent have received both doses.

That change will likely mean a change in public health orders, though Manitoba typically waits one possible incubation period - about two weeks - between hitting a vaccination or case load milestone and announcing changes. Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister announced that changes would be coming in a July 7 press conference.

"I don't want to elevate expectations today, but we will have more to say on this in the coming days," Pallister said.

No word on what orders may be lifted or changed was provided by Pallister July 7, nor was a firm date when the changes would be announced. The Premier did say that an announcement would likely come next week.

Pallister also said that changes would not be dramatic, adding that other jurisdictions have seen COVID-19 rates spike again after easing restrictions too much, too quickly.

"This is a marathon, as I've said before - not a sprint. We're already countries around the world that are having bouncebacks or COVID-19 as a result of variants of concern, for example. We're seeing countries that have led the way early now falling to the back of the pack because people aren't taking up the challenge of getting vaccinated - therefore, their COVID-19 risk remains and will grow."

In total, more than 1.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been given in Manitoba. That includes about 76,700 doses in the Northern Health Region (NHR), where about 76 per cent of eligible people have received at least a first dose and 55 per cent of people have received a second dose. Four of Manitoba's five health regions have given one dose to more than 70 per cent of eligible people and fully vaccinated over 50 per cent of the eligible population - the only remaining straggler is the Southern Health/Sante Sud district, where only 59 per cent of people eligible have one dose and only 39 per cent of people have received a second dose.

All Manitoba supersites will be open for walk-in appointments July 14, with both Pfizer and Moderna doses available at each site. There are only two supersites in northern Manitoba - one in The Pas at the Royal Canadian Legion at 4 Veterans Way, the other in Thompson at the Thompson Regional Community Centre. Doses at both of these sites will be available for youths ages 12-17 - Pfizer doses will be prioritized for youths, who are not yet approved to receive Moderna doses.

Flin Flon's pop-up clinic at the Flin Flon Community Hall will not be open July 14, but will be open July 8, 9 ,15, 16, 22 and 23 from 10:10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. All people age 12 and over in Manitoba are eligible to receive a first or second dose.

Hours are being extended at several supersites starting this week, but only in southern Manitoba. Hours at the Thompson and The Pas supersites will remain the same this week.
