In brief: Flin Flon seniors get smaller savings

Flin Flon seniors are in for a break on their property taxes, but not one as generous as the Manitoba government once promised.

Flin Flon seniors are in for a break on their property taxes, but not one as generous as the Manitoba government once promised.

Finance Minister Greg Dewar said Tuesday the NDP will double the education property tax credit for seniors from $235 to $470 this year.

The NDP had pledged to eliminate education property taxes for seniors by 2015, then 2016, but now Dewar says the government will work toward that goal at some future date, according to the Canadian Press.

Dewar’s announcement drew scorn from the Opposition.

“[Premier] Greg Selinger was elected on a promise to eliminate school taxes for seniors,” said Progressive Conservative finance critic Cameron Friesen.

“Astonishingly, the minister of finance refused today to specify when, or even if, that promise will ever be fulfilled.”
