Ashton also picked up the support of northern Manitoba’s other NDP MLA, Amanda Lathlin of The Pas.

“It is critical the next leader of our party be committed to our party and our province,” said a press release issued by Ashton’s campaign on behalf of Lindsey and Lathlin.

“As northern MLAs, we believe that Steve Ashton is the best candidate for leader of our party. He is a committed New Democrat best able to put forward a bold progressive agenda. He knows every part of our province.”

Ashton, 61, served as a Thompson MLA from 1981 to 2016 and held several cabinet posts. He is running for leader against Fort Rouge MLA Wab Kinew.
