Five people are now in the running for a vacant spot on Creighton town council.

Before the final call for nominations for the town’s upcoming byelection, several Creighton residents turned in their papers. Six candidates – Steele Higgins, Richard Masson, Max Owen, Anita Rainville, Heather Strom and Matt Winterton – filed paperwork by the Sept. 12 deadline, declaring their intent to run in the byelection. Winterton withdrew his nomination on Sept. 13, leaving five candidates to run for the post.

Creighton residents will be able to cast their ballot for either Higgins, Masson, Owen, Rainville or Strom on two different dates. Advance polls for the byelection will be held on 4 pm to 8 pm Oct. 3, with election day voting set for 9 am to 8 pm on Oct. 17. Both polls will be held at council chambers at the Town of Creighton office.

The byelection was called to fill the council seat of Shirley Owen, a three-term councillor and noted community volunteer who passed away earlier this year.

A community forum is unlikely to be held for the candidates to discuss town issues. The Reminder will have a special feature in an issue before the byelection discussing the candidates and their platforms.
