The Flin Flon Fire Department is on the hunt for a new chief after Chad Cooper stepped away from the group to pursue a new job.

According to officials with the department, Cooper was hired as the new deputy chief for the Prince Rupert Fire Department in July, leaving Flin Flon last month.

No interim chief for the department has been named. Instead, the department’s existing fire captains have shared some responsibilities of the chief. The City of Flin Flon has put up a job posting for the now-vacant position.

“We’ve shortlisted and there’s a hiring committee in place,” said Flin Flon Mayor Cal Huntley during the August 6 meeting of city council.

“We’re really comfortable with the captains and lieutenants. They’re doing a really good job and we’re very pleased with that. I think we’ve had a reasonably good response. We had some local candidates and some external candidates. We’ll see where it goes.”
