Paying tribute to the roles women play in our world - that’s the theme for local events planned for the upcoming International Women’s Week.

A gaggle of local organizations, headed up by the Women’s Resource Centre, will hold several community celebrations and events as part of the week, running from March 7-11.

This year’s International Women’s Week festivities, much like other events over the past year, will mostly be held remotely - events will be streamed online and over social media instead of holding gatherings, many of which are still barred under provincial COVID-19 regulations.

The first event will take place March 7, starting at 2 p.m. - an afternoon of music performances and art presentations streamed from Johnny’s Social Club and the NorVA Centre. Performers on the bill include Imrianna Jones, Faith Krahn, Brent and Susan Lethbridge and Doug McGregor and Ann Ross.

Throughout the week, other events will take place daily at 7 p.m., running from March 8-11, celebrating female leaders in the Flin Flon area. Those being celebrated will range from women in health and wellness to arts and creatives, to women in business to women and the environment.

The week will be capped off with a women’s drum circle at the Rotary Wheel March 11 at 4:30.

“It will be sort of like a closing ceremony, but it’s more about sounding our drums to pray for the communities, Flin Flon area and surrounding communities,” said Women’s Resource Centre counsellor Cindy O’Nabigon, one of the week’s lead organizers. The drum circle will also be livestreamed.

O’Nabigon said this year’s International Women’s Week events will be different than those in the past, but that community participation has been encouraging.

“We’ve got quite a few presenters and people. I’m quite excited about it,” she said.

O’Nabigon also mentioned work from volunteers and helpers, including people from the NorVA Centre and the Flin Flon Neighbourhood Revitalization Corporation, would be crucial in holding the events.

Events can be found on the social media pages for several local groups, including on the Women’s Resource Centre Facebook page.
