Rental deposits will soon increase by $50 in Creighton.

A bylaw regarding rent and deposits in Creighton received third and final reading during council’s April 11 meeting.

The measure will increase deposits for renters from $150 to $200 and increase deposits for trailer court spots from $350 to $400.

Existing Creighton bylaws on rent and deposits have been in place since 2012.

The measure will go through committee before being approved by council at a later date.

Boiler grant

Councillors hope that a provincial infrastructure grant will cover the costs for a new piece of equipment.

Council has applied to the Northern Capital Grants Program to pay for a new culvert boiler. A measure approving the buying of the boiler was approved in March.

“We’re going to have it either way, but we’re hoping they’ll cover it off through capital grants,” said Creighton mayor Bruce Fidler.

The estimated net cost of the boiler is $45,500. Payments for the piece of equipment will be made once it is delivered to Creighton.

Culvert boilers are used to thaw and open up frozen and obstructed culverts.

The town’s existing boiler was bought 25 years ago and is still in use.

Sharps disposal

Council was notified that needle drop boxes had been installed in the town.

The town’s protective services committee was told that Public Health had installed sharps disposal boxes in the public washrooms at Creighton’s provincial building.

Until recently, there had not been a permanently installed sharps disposal area in town, including none at town recreation facilities.

Council will review whether or not other boxes should be added around the community later this spring.

Memorial

Council also sent a letter of condolence to the City of Humboldt after the April 6 bus accident that claimed the lives of 16 people associated with the Humboldt Broncos hockey team. Several members of town council attended a memorial vigil at the Whitney Forum on April 9 for the community and team.
