Flin Flon city council is now down one member. Council members announced that Guy Rideout, first elected to council in a 2016 byelection, will be stepping down from his post due to personal reasons at the end of February.

Mayor Cal Huntley gave a statement at the beginning of the Feb. 18 city council meeting thanking Rideout for his service on council.

“We will miss him and we wish him the best going forward,” he said.

Huntley said council was made aware of Rideout’s decision to step down earlier this month. Rideout’s resignation from council will be effective as of March 1.

“He sat down with our CAO and then he and I had a conversation earlier in February. We had that discussion and determined that the end of his term would be the end of this month,” Huntley said.

“I did try to encourage him to rethink his decision, but he has his reasons and they are his reasons. It was certainly all done on good terms.”

Voters will have a chance to elect Rideout’s replacement in a byelection later this year. A firm date for the byelection has not yet been set.

“We acknowledge the work that he’s done and we will miss him here. He’s a character and he brought a lot of good perspective to the table,” said Huntley.

Rideout, who was not present at the Feb. 18 meeting, was not available for comment.
