The pickings may be slimmer than normal, but people hoping to register for community groups will have a chance to do it in one place this week.

The City of Flin Flon will host Registration Under One Roof at the Flin Flon Community Hall Sept. 10 from 5-8 p.m., allowing attendees to sign up for multiple groups quickly and, if organizers have their way, safely.

Unlike in previous years, the community hall won’t be packed - with COVID-19-related uncertainty for gathering sizes, building use and extracurricular activities, some clubs and groups have dropped out of the event and possibly out of operation altogether this year. Other groups with online registration, including Flin Flon Minor Hockey, will sit the event out to avoid any unnecessary COVID-19 risk.

Only six groups will be at this year’s registration event - Northern Lights Dance Academy, Flin Flon Skating Club, Boreal Explorers, Toastmasters, The Hub and Girl Guides.

Organizer and City of Flin Flon recreation administrator Caitlin Bailey said any further groups would necessitate holding more than one event - instead of holding a hall full of booths and groups, more than one sitting would be held.

“We wouldn’t be having more groups than that in one evening. If there was going to be more groups, we would have to do multiple evenings,” she said.

Social distancing, hand sanitizing and a maximum of 50 people inside the hall will be gospel during the event due to provincial regulations.

“We’ll have to count numbers at the door and people will have to follow social distancing,” Bailey said. Masks will not be mandatory at the event - no City of Flin Flon facilities have required them - but anyone wishing to wear a mask will not be discouraged.

“We just wanted to make sure that the groups that do need a space to hold registration, were able to still do that,” said Bailey.
