The St. Peter and St. James Anglican Church will hold its annual memorial candle event again this year, meant to provide families with a way to remember their loved ones before the holiday season rush.

The group has been placing the candles every holiday season since 2004.

Candles will be placed at graveyards and columbariums in Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach, and along Highway 10 in Cranberry Portage. Other candles will be taken to seniors’ homes around Flin Flon and to Rotary Court.

Yvonne Fawcett, an event organizer and church member, said local involvement with the candles this year has been encouraging.

“It’s either the same level or surpassed [what we’ve seen before]. I feel we’ve had a good campaign this year,” she said.

“Between the ones that are bought for the grave-sites – and there’s many that are put along the road also and at the entranceways – I would say there’s probably 1,200 candles made for that.”

The candles will be lit in Cranberry Portage on Saturday, Nov. 17 and in Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach on Sunday, Nov. 18, depending on weather conditions – Fawcett said that the candles will not be lit if conditions are too windy.

“They cannot light if the wind velocity is 10 kilometres or more,” she said. “If it’s a light snow, that won’t stop anything. It’s the wind. The candles that are inside the ice, if they get the least little sniff of wind, they put themselves out.”

If conditions are poor, the ceremonies will be moved to the next day.
