Another summer project with the Flin Flon Arts Council is about to kick off. The group plans to create a community garden, growing plants and food with assistance from Flin Flonners.

The new pilot project is being done under the auspices of the Flin Flon Arts Council and its North Central Canada Centre for Arts and Environment (NCCCAE) offshoot. The plan is to grow food, using seeds sourced from the public, to grow food and plants to be later given back to community groups.

“The community garden will be a space where food is grown by the community, for the community,” said Danielle Yungwirth with the arts council.

“We hope to improve both sustainability and food security within the Flin Flon area.”

Plans for the garden are to have the garden be open to the public, allowing community members to visit and possibly help maintain the garden. Organizers also hope to offer classes and educational programming, like beginners’ gardening, art classes inspired by nature, nutrition, ecology and other subjects.

While the location of the garden has not been officially released, organizers are hoping to get started on the project this summer and are looking for volunteers and people to donate seeds. Anyone interested in getting involved is asked to contact the Flin Flon Arts Council, either on social media pages or by emailing [email protected].
