Aqua Doves take flight with synchro camp

“It’s all about fostering a love of the water,” says Amy Sapergia Green, coordinator of the Flin Flon Creighton Aqua Doves’ first synchronized swimming camp.

“It’s all about fostering a love of the water,” says Amy Sapergia Green, coordinator of the Flin Flon Creighton Aqua Doves’ first synchronized swimming camp.

Held Monday to Friday at the Flin Flon Aqua Centre and École McIsaac School, the camp was attended by 24 swimmers ages 8 to 12.

The girls participated in team-building activities, crafts, games, and, of course, had lots of water time.

They also flexed their muscles in gymnastics, yoga and Zumba, through sessions led by local instructors each afternoon.

With the synchro season approaching in early October, this is one way for the Aqua Doves coaches and parent-led executive committee to reach out to girls who might be interested in the sport.

Saperia Green noted that half of the campers had never tried synchro before.

Each afternoon, coaches Kelcey and Kylee Andersen have been working with the campers on water routines, with support from volunteer instructors Madelyn Lies, Tessley Korchinski, Caitlin Henderson, Maryn McKee and Kalena Kittle.

“It really is amazing that this is how they are choosing to spend their summer break,” said Sapergia Green of the young volunteers. “They have all taken on leadership roles and made this camp amazing.”

The synchro campers will show off their routines at a mini-watershow at 4 pm today, Friday, August 28, at the Aqua Centre. Everyone is welcome.
