S&P/TSX composite closes over 140 points lower, U.S. stock markets were mixed

TORONTO — Canada's main stock index fell more than 140 points to finish trading Tuesday, while U.S. stock markets were mixed. The S&P/TSX composite index was down 144.71 points at 27,054.14.

TORONTO — Canada's main stock index fell more than 140 points to finish trading Tuesday, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 144.71 points at 27,054.14.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 436.36 points at 44,023.29. The S&P 500 index was down 24.80 points at 6,243.76, while the Nasdaq composite was up 37.47 points at 20,677.80.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.94 cents US compared with 73.03 cents US on Monday.

The August crude oil contract was down 44 cents US at US$65.637 per barrel.

The August gold contract was down US$22.40 at US$3,336.70 an ounce.
