Strong fan support and a good start couldn't help the junior varsity Kopper Kweens defeat Gillam in the final of Hapnot's JV volleyball tournament last weekend. After winning the first set 25-20, the team then lost 25-16 and 15-8. "I thought the girls played well," said coach Gord Halpin. "We got in a couple of bad rotations and the girls got in trouble and couldn't dig out of it." Halpin said had his team been better with their rotation, the result would have been different. Going into this tournament the goal was to make the finals. "I think this team is right on line with our goals," Halpin said. "We're only going to get better." Halpin said the shift during the final happened when he began giving all his players playing time. "The chemistry just isn't quite there because it is a young team and sometimes it just needs time to develop," he explained. "You make some changes and you take that chance, but you don't have the chemistry and things don't work right." Despite the breakdown, Halpin felt his team played well enough to win. And that's something that one of his players, Natasha Rothlander, believed, too. "I think we performed really good considering that team had older people, because they're such a small community," commented Natasha, on Gillam, which she felt is a good team. "I think we played awesome," she said. At points during the final, especially in the last set, Natasha showed frustration after missing a serve and a few broken plays. "I think we could have beat that team," said Natasha, who was disappointed. In the boys final, RDPC (R.D. Parker Collegiate) defeated Gillam 25-19 and 25-11. Other scores on the boys side were: HCI (Hapnot Collegiate Insitute) over JAR (Joe A. Ross School) 25-8, 25-22 HCI over CCS (Creighton Community School) 25-23, 27- 25 Gillam over CCS 25-13, 25-14 RDPC over CCS 25-11, 25-15 Gillam over HCI 25-15, 26-28, 15-11 HCI over MBCI 25-20, 25-20 CCS over JAR 25-21, 25-14 RDPC over HCI 25-22, 25-14 MBCI over CCS 25-23, 26-24 Other girls scores: HCI over MBCI 25-6, 25-14 HCI 25-20 over RDPC, RDPC over HCI 25-5 Gillam over HCI 25-18, HCI over Gillam 26-24 Gillam over CCS 25-17, 25-17 HCI over JAR 25-12, 25-17
