The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League along with the City of Yorkton are pleased to announce that the SJHL has formally applied to host the World Junior 'A' Challenge, which is scheduled to take place in the Fall of 2006. The World Junior 'A' Challenge is an international event bringing the world's hockey powers together in October each year. The World Junior 'A' Hockey Challenge will feature eight teams and seven countries (Canada will enter an East and West team) in a tournament style event featuring the very best Junior 'A' calibre players in the world. In a formal letter written to Hockey Canada, Yorkton Host Bid Committee Chair Don Kunkel says, "On behalf of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, the Yorkton Terriers Junior 'A' Hockey Club, the Gallagher Centre (formerly known as the Parkland Argiplex), and the City of Yorkton; we would like to inform Hockey Canada of our intent to bid on the World Junior 'A' Challenge to be held during the proposed dates of October 5-10, 2006." "We believe Yorkton would be an excellent choice for the event because of the facilities we have, our previous success in hosting major events, and the support we can garner from our community," adds Kunkel. The Gallagher Centre recently completed a massive face lift that includes a remodeled Convention Center - used for banquets and other social functions, as well as a brand new lobby area with expanded size and commercial space for businesses. A local sporting goods store is expected to take up permanent residence in the very near future. The new Water Park is complete with a water slide, wave pool, lazy river, hot tub, steam room, and a lap pool in addition to other features. The Host Committee is proposing a Saskatchewan Event with Yorkton as a base and as many as 12 games played in several satellite locations. Melfort, Humboldt, Melville, Estevan, and Weyburn could all receive games in their communities. Hockey Canada will announce the winning bid in November of this year.9/26/2005
