The world junior hockey tournament wrapped up Tuesday with a silver medal for the Canadian team, accompanied by a silver lining for the Saskatchewan economy. The tournament is estimated to have brought in about $44 million in economic activity in the province, with final numbers to be confirmed this spring. Gross revenue for the tournament totaled $24.5 million from game ticket sales, 50-50 tickets, merchandise, sponsorship, grants and other funding. Ticket sales generated $14.7 million Ð very close to the $14.8 million total from ticket sales last year when Ottawa hosted the games. "On behalf of Premier Brad Wall and the Government of Saskatchewan, I extend my sincere thanks to all of those involved in hosting this spectacular event," Enterprise Saskatchewan Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. "The success of the 2010 Saskatchewan World Junior championships was dependent on our positive Saskatchewan spirit. Saskatchewan people know how to put on a world-class event, and more importantly, extended the warm hospitality that has made this a memorable experience for hockey fans from our province and from around the world." The Government of Saskatchewan has supported and promoted the tournament from the initial bid for the games to providing funding that increased arena seating and expanded facilities to allow for the extra capacity during the 31-game tournament. Approximately 330,000 people attended the games over the last two weeks, the third-highest attendance rate in the history of the tournament. It is estimated that about 2,400 people volunteered during the tournament.
