The cleanup of Flin Flon's metal-contaminated playgrounds concluded last week when the revamped Grandview Park was unveiled. Complete with swings, a slide, a climbing structure and a picnic table overlooking Sipple Hill, the park is being hailed by neighbourhood residents as a true gem. It's the last of 10 city parks the Manitoba government layered with fresh soil and sod due to elevated levels of smelter-borne metals that had tainted the ground. The new equipment was purchased with the financial support of the city, HudBay Minerals 80th Anniversary Fund, Northern Neighbours Foundation and the province's Neighbourhoods Alive! program. Neighbourhood residents Karen Power and Audrey Bensen oversaw the grant applications and now look forward to the park getting plenty of use. The province's park remediation program began in 2008 and continued in the summers of 2009 and 2010.
