It doesn't seem to matter when the Bust the Winter Blues Festival is held, the northern weather always finds the events. This past weekend, Flin Flon and Creighton joined together to put on the wintery festival Ð with some luck. Even though the festival was pushed back to the end of the month, instead of being held at the beginning, the cold weather forced a few events to be canceled. With the cold winds on Friday, the opening ceremonies weren't as well attended as organizers had hoped, but the sun came out on Sunday and offered more participants for the fishing derby. "It was pretty well attended," said Channa Senyk, Town of Creighton recreation director, who sat on the organizing committee. "The attendance was at par (with last year)." An estimated 1,500 people made their way through the events, which included the opening ceremonies, a teen dance, pancake breakfast and a grad tea at Creighton Community School. As well, people enjoyed a few sweets while they listened to the talent of local musicians at the coffee house at the R.H. Auditorium. A few of the seniors got in on the card game action and won a trophy or two. And while some were out on Phantom Lake for the Fishing Derby, others were on Channing Lake for a boot-hockey tournament. But to keep warm, the Asham Stompers was the best-attended event Ð aside from the Kinettes' Trivia Night on Friday. As for the attendance of other events, Senyk says organizers would have liked to have seen more people out at the teen dance, as it only comes to town once a year. See 'Fishing' on pg. Continued from pg. The cold weather was on the tip of everyone's tongue over the weekend, which left Senyk to joke "we should do it in the summer." But for now, the Bust the Winter Blues will remain a winter event.
