One of Hapnot Collegiate's top athletes has dashed her way to a provincial award. Eileen Pawliuk has been named the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association's Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. "I was really surprised. I didn't expect it," said Eileen, 18, who graduates later this month. Eileen's award came in recognition of her efforts with the Hapnot Kopper Kweens track and field team. At the recent Rural Track and Field Championships in Selkirk, she took home a gold medal in the 3,000 m event and a silver in the 1,500 m event. She won another silver in the school's 4 x 400 m relay team. The teen may have been taken aback by her award, but her track and field coach was not. "Eileen is a very dedicated athlete who has become a role model for other members of the team," said Steve Lytwyn. "Her effort and enthusiasm have been a huge reason for her success." Aside from track and field, Eileen competes in volleyball, basketball, soccer and figure skating. She finds success not only in sports, but also in academics, maintaining a 77 per cent average.
