Jonathon Naylor Editor If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice has announced Chris Garrett will be the starting running back when the club opens the regular season in a week. The small but wieldy Garrett, 25, will again have the starter's job he held at the end of last season. 'I told him he's doing a good job. Certainly he's got some competition in camp, which is always a good thing...' LaPolice told the Winnipeg Free Press. 'We're looking for big things.' In six games for Winnipeg last season, Garrett averaged 6.3 yards per carry and rushed for 576 yards and four touchdowns. The Blue Bombers open their season on Friday, June 29 in Vancouver against the B.C. Lions. That same day, the Saskatchewan Roughriders start their season in Hamilton, where they will battle the Tiger-Cats. The Riders announced this week they have signed receiver Chris Getzlaf, 29, to a contract extension. 'In 2011, the University of Regina product enjoyed a breakout campaign, leading all Saskatchewan receivers with 1,071 receiving yards, while finishing second in the league with 10 touchdowns,' noted the CFL website. On Saturday, June 30, the Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Eskimos open their season in the Alberta capital. Canada Day in Calgary will see the Stampeders hosting the Montreal Alouettes. Last season saw the Blue Bombers place first in the East while the Lions topped the West. B.C. went on to win the 99th Grey Cup.
