The Weyburn Red Wings will be shooting for sole possession of a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League record in the best-of-seven league final for the MemberCARE Cup. Weyburn will play the Kindersley Klippers for a berth against the Manitoba Junior Hockey League champion in the best-of-seven Anavet Cup, starting April 24 in Kindersley or Weyburn. The Anavet Cup champion will qualify for the Royal Bank Cup national junior 'A' championship May 8-16 in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Weyburn and the Prince Albert Raiders share the league record with eight championships each. Kindersley was third in the Dodge Conference, and fourth overall, with a 35-17-7 record and one overtime loss, for 78 points in 60 games during the regular schedule. The Klippers were three points out of first place in the conference, and overall. Veteran Troy Schwab led Kindersley and was eighth in the league with 65 points, including 29 goals, in 55 regular-season games. Teammate Curtis Bazylinski was 10th in the league with 63 points, including 32 goals, in 59 games. Schwab is second among league playoff scorers with 16 points, including eight goals, in 10 games. Bazylinski is tied for sixth among league playoff scorers with 12 points, including seven assists, in 10 games. Kindersley rookie Steve Houghton was sixth among league goalies with a 2.88 goals against average in 1,126 minutes during the regular schedule. Houghton, 18, had a .911 saves percentage. Nathan Deobald of Kindersley was ninth among league goalies with a 3.11 goals against average in 2,371 minutes. Deobald, 20, was second in the league with a 25-12-3 won-lost-tied record and had two shutouts. Deobald leads league playoff goalies with a .940 saves percentage and is second among league playoff goalies with a 2.00 goals against average in 600 minutes. He is tied for the league playoff lead with eight wins and two shutouts. Weyburn was second in the Sherwood Conference and fifth overall, at 34-19-5 and two overtime losses, for 75 points, during the regular season. Clayton Bastura and Jereme Tendler of Weyburn were tied for 12th in the league with 61 points each during the regular schedule. Bastura had 28 goals and Tendler scored 26 times in 53 and 56 games, respectively. Rick Wood of Weyburn was 19th in the league with 56 points, including 35 assists, in 60 games. Bastura is tied for sixth among league playoff scorers with 12 points, including six goals, in 11 games. Frankie Dicks of Weyburn is tied for 10th among league playoff scorers with nine points, including six assists, in 10 games. Weyburn veteran Cale Jordison was fifth among league goalies with a 2.86 goals against average in 1,510 minutes during the regular season. Jordison, 21, had two shutouts and a .907 saves percentage. Rookie Kevin Magee of Weyburn was 10th among league goalies with a 3.12 goals against average in 1,578 minutes. Magee, 19, had two shutouts and a 16-7-4 won-lost-tied record. Jordison leads league playoff goalies with a 1.88 goals against average and is third among league playoff goalies with a .930 saves percentage in 703 minutes. He is tied with Deobald with eight wins and two shutouts. Kindersley defeated the defending league, Anavet Cup and Royal Bank Cup champion Humboldt Broncos 4-2 in the best-of-seven conference final. Kindersley swept a best-of-seven conference semi-final against the Battlefords North Stars. Weyburn beat the Yorkton Terriers 4-2 in the best-of-seven conference final. Weyburn eliminated the Notre Dame Hounds 4-1 in a best-of-seven conference semi-final. Kindersley won its only league championship in 2002. Weyburn won the league championship in 1970, 1971, 1984, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001. The Red Wings were Centennial Cup national champions in 1984 and advanced to the national championships in 1994, 1997, 1998 and 2001, respectively.
