The Flin Flon Bombers haven't had much luck in the shootout department until lately, but they proved their abilities twice while on the road this week. Following Tuesday's 1-0 win over the North Stars, the Bombers earned another shootout win in Humboldt the next night with a 4-3 victory. Earning their win in Humboldt pushed the Bombers ahead of the Weyburn Red Wings by one point Ð giving them the lead in the SJHL race. Earning a possible three of four points on the road, the Bombers return to Flin Flon to host the Nipawin Hawks tomorrow night. Wednesday was a successful night for Brennan Cox as he was able to get past Broncos netminder Andrew Bodnarchuk for the game's first goal late in the period Ð giving the Bombers a 1-0 lead, which carried through to the second period. Alex Lamontagne and Patrick Sitko earned helpers on Cox's power play goal. But that wasn't the only marker Cox put up. He came through in a big way for the Maroon and White as he scored the only goal in the shootout, which lasted 16 shooters, to win the game. With a 1-0 lead over the home Broncos, the Bombers hit the ice for the second period. It didn't take Lamontagne long to get into the swing of things and earn a marker himself, with help from Cox and Tanner Korchinski, just before two minutes hit the clock. Closing in on the end of the second period, Mike Rey made it 3-0 for the Bombers with help from Taylor Thiessen and Michael Young on a power play. But with less than a minute on the clock, the Broncos broke Matt Weninger's shutout to make it 3-1. Hitting the ice for the third period, the Bombers were done scoring, but the Broncos still had a few more in them. Getting past Weninger, Cameron Gibson earned his team's second goal, with a third coming from Spencer Braaten. A scoreless overtime sent the teams into a shootout, where 16 shooters tried their luck. First up, the Bombers sent in Rey to clean up, but he was unable to get past Bodnarchuk. Weninger was a wall to Dane Lindskog while Bodnarchuk denied Brody Haygarth. Hoping for a bit more luck, Braaten took his chances with Weninger, but was unable to get past the netminder. Matty Lecours was next for the Bombers, but like the rest, he was denied. The same story went for Justin Buzzeo, Ryan Fox, Gibson, Young, Nick Keller, Sitko, Troy Gasper, Lamontagne and Spencer Baht. Cox was able to turn the tables on Bodnarchuk and earn the lone goal of the shootout Ð giving the Bombers the win. Following Cox, the Broncos had one final chance to score. Weninger was still on his game as he denied Taylor Johnson. By the end of the game, the Bombers outshot the Broncos 42-37 and took the 4-3 victory. Tomorrow night, the Bombers play host to the Hawks in their final home game before the Christmas break. Following Nipawin, the Bombers will hit the road for four games in five nights on their southern swing before taking a much-needed break.
