Hapnot Collegiate’s senior boys’ basketball team lost their chance at a zone title last weekend, but their season just took a turn for the better.
Hapnot Kings coach Don Dyke said the SV boys have been selected to play a wild-card game against Brandon’s Neelin High School on Monday night. If they win that game, they will head to provincials in Virden next Thursday as the wild-card team.
Dyke noted that the Kings beat Neelin a month ago by one point, so Monday’s game should be an exciting one.
Wild-card teams are selected by MHSAA directors, based on the team’s performance throughout the season.
“It certainly goes to show how far the program has come to be one of the two teams in the province selected for a chance at the wild-card spot,” said Dyke.
Both of Hapnot’s senior basketball teams competed locally last weekend when Flin Flon hosted the MHSAA Zone 11 tournaments for boys and girls.
Flin Flon and Thompson went to the finals in both the boys and girls categories, but Thompson took home the zone banners for both teams.
Senior girls’ coach Tony Ticzon noted that this year’s SV girls’ team achieved their goal of making it to the finals at zones.
“We came up short, but they gave it their best to compete against the second-ranked team in the province,” he said this week.
“We are so proud of them.”
