The Weyburn Red Wings are skating on thin ice, with mounds of red ink threatening the team’s future.
Global News reports the franchise is $180,000 in debt this season with more than a dozen games left in the regular season.
“You can’t pinpoint exactly when the team’s financial woes started, but it came to a head this month,” Larry Tribiger, president of the Red Wings, told Global.
Declining attendance and rising costs have contributed to the shortfall, Tribiger said.
According to the Global report, the Red Wings need about $800,000 a year to operate.
The team is inviting the public to a town hall meeting tomorrow, Jan. 22, to discuss its financial future.
“The Red Wings would like to encourage shareholders as well as the general public to attend,” the team said in a notice on its website. “The Red Wings are open to any feedback and ideas that the community may have to help continue the winning tradition in the City of Weyburn.”
The Red Wings were founded in 1961.
