Buses and cars from the south will be pouring into Flin Flon this weekend in preparation for the Provincial Golden Gals Play Downs set to begin Monday at the Uptown Curling Club. On Sunday evening, there will be a registration and time for everyone to get acquainted at the Victoria Inn. A committee has been working hard to see that this event is done right, and it would be appreciated if residents would turn out to watch the curling and welcome the visitors to our community as only Flin Flonners can. Teams will represent Russell, Shoal Lake, Minota, Minnedosa, Wheat City, Riverview, Manitou, Morden Argyle, Stonewall, Selkirk, Assiniboine, Charleswood and Fort Rouge, with two teams from Flin Flon. The first draw gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Monday with Hazel Miller of Russell taking on Flin Flon's Ann Wiebe team of Sheila Adams, Karin Hanson and Norma Barr. Also, Darlene Grandmont of Argyle will take on Shirley Bell of Shoal Lake, Pat Pink of Riverview will face Marian Whalen of Assiniboine and Della Campbell of Stonewall will play Sharon Tetrault of Morden. In the second draw at 11:00 a.m., Mary Adams of Wheat City will play June Reece of Charleswood; Sheila Smith of Minnedosa plays Jean Ross of Ft. Rouge; Jean McKeen of Minota plays Evelyn Sanders of Manitou; and Geri Kotuku of Flin Flon with Rita Chute, Fern Kozak and Joyce Cooper plays Wanitta Stewart of Selkirk. The draw was made up by the MLCA (Manitoba Ladies Curling Association in Winnipeg) and is a modified double knockout. The draw Master is Judy Maitland and the Chief Umpire is Lee Davis. The opening ceremonies take place Monday at 1:30 at Uptown with the next draw at 3 p.m. Monday evening, there will be a banquet at R.J's Motel and Restaurant. On Tuesday, the draws start at 9 a.m. with the fifth draw being at 11:30 a.m. and the sixth at 2 p.m. Tuesday evening. there will be a banquet at Rocky View OTA. On Wednesday, the seventh draw will be at 10 a.m. and the eighth draw will be at 2 p.m. On Thursday, the ninth draw will be at 10 a.m. and the 10th draw, if necessary, will be at 2 p.m. with the closing ceremonies immediately following the final game.
