The Player of the Week for the period ending January 23rd is 19-year-old Battlefords forward Michael George. George picked up eight points in three games played as he helped the Stars displace the Kindersley Klippers for first place in the Itech Conference.ÊFor the week, George scored twice and added six helpers. George is amongst the top scorers in the SJHL for the season and also is tops on his team with 15 goals and 37 assists in 43 games. Runners-up included Estevan forward Lorne Tytlandsvik (five goals), Estevan's Bear Trapp (six points in three games), and Jesse Matlock (six points in three games) of the Stars. Defenseman of the Week: Kirk Medernach, Weyburn Red Wings The Defensemen of the Week for the period ending January 23rd is 20-year-old Kirk Medernach of the Weyburn Red Wings. Medernach was a key offseason acquisition for the Red Wings and is rounding into form at just the right time. He had five assists in three games and was also a key physical presence on the back end as Weyburn moved into a fifth place tie for the final playoff spot with Melville in the Sherwood Conference. For the season, Medernach has two goals and ten assists in 44 games.ÊHe also has 120-penalty minutes. Medernach narrowly beat out Battlefords' standout rookie Derek Keller for the award.ÊAlso considered were Kindersley's Gio Flamminio and Battlefords' Jared Mohr. Goaltender of the Week:ÊNathan Heinen, Humboldt Broncos The SJHL Goaltender of the Week is 18-year-old rookie Nathan Heinen of the Humboldt Broncos. Heinen has picked up the slack left by an injury to Nathan Fischl and went 2-and-1 in four games played over the last seven days.ÊFischl posted a 1.87-GAA over that time period and led all netminders with a .934-SPCT. Heinen is third in the SJHL with a 2.42-GAA and his .927-SPCT is first overall.Ê He is 9-and-7 in 19-games played. Other finalists included Weyburn's Brenden Cuthbert, Yorkton's Kevin Dziaduck, and Nipawin's Michael Clements.
