The winter season is beginning to slow down, but the Flin Flon Community Hall is still being occupied by walkers once a week through the Walking in the Right Direction program. The flat, dry surface is ideal for the seniors who attend the program, every Tuesday. The City of Flin FlonÕs Recreation Director Aimee Deans has been running the program for two years now. ÒItÕs a social, physical and healthy experience,Ó says Deans, who adds that a healthy snack is provided. The free program is open to anyone interested, but she says, itÕs generally females in their seniors who attend. ÒItÕs just safer than walking outside. They walk indoors,Ó she says. Walking in the Right Direction runs from September until June, when itÕs nice enough to walk outside again. Although there isnÕt a walking program in the summer, Deans says there are special events such as poker rallies for those to attend. Aside from a safe place to walk and a snack, those attending the program are offered pedometers, CDs with all the classics from the Ô50s and Ô60s and the use of exercise balls and weights. Many of the walkers also wear counter bracelets, as one mile is 22 laps around the hall. ÒMost of the participants get in a mile,Ó says Deans. ÒItÕs a very casual atmosphere. They walk at their own pace and we stretch together.Ó Although a typical turnout is in between 10 and 15 people, she says it doesnÕt matter how many show up, the program runs anyway. ÒIt provides a place for everybody,Ó she says. Along with those coming in for the physical activity, Deans often has dietitians come in as well.
