There are four ways for you to be involved in the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life event, which will be held September 7 at the Creighton Ball Diamond. First, you can be a team participant. Get together with family, friends, or coworkers to form a team of approximately 10 members per teams. Each team fundraises for helping in the fight against cancer. It is recommended that each participant raise at least $100. Team registrations are still accepted on the day of the event. Second, you can become a volunteer. There are many ways to help make Relay for Life happen in our community. It is an enormous undertaking for a community to host an event such as this. Some volunteer opportunities include site set-up and take-down, serving food, barbecuing, luminaries sales, luminaries set-up and take-down, and kids activities. Thirdly, you can register as a survivor. Cancer survivors are invited to participate in the Survivors Victory Lap, which is the first lap of the Relay for Life. Surrounded by an emotional show of support as they walk the Victory Lap, survivors celebrate success in their battle with cancer and give hope and inspiration to those still facing the disease. Lastly, you can help with the luminary sales. To remember and honour those who inspire you, purchase a Luminary at a cost of $5. Luminaries are candles that are placed in special bags that bear the names of cancer survivors and loves ones who have lost their battle with cancer, and your own special dedication. At the Relay for Life event, the luminaries are lit during an emotional, moving ceremony at dusk. You luminary and its message provides light and inspiration for the participants all night long.
