Traditional school may be out, but the waterways of Denare Beach have been transformed over the past few days into a classroom for the Manitoba Sailing Association & Precambrian Sailing Club. Twenty students, many of whom had never sailed before, from Flin Flon, Denare Beach, Bakers Narrows and Big Island began lessons on Wednesday morning. Some of the students who are eligible will be racing tomorrow in a series of races to qualify for the Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games for the NorMan Region. With an age range of 10 to 15, residents of Denare Beach, Flin Flon, Bakers Narrows, Big Island, and a few visitors, are taking to the waterways in hopes of being named for the Provincial Team. Though not all of the students in the club are eligible to race, organizer Dave Price says itÕs still a good time for everyone. ÒWe want to develop young sailors and this is a great opportunity for the kids to be introduced (to sailing),Ó says Price. As far as Price knows, a local sailing club was around 20 years ago, but there hasnÕt been one since. ÒItÕs all the older folks who do the sailing now, and we need to get the young guys involved,Ó he says. After arriving in Flin Flon in 1970, Price lived at the Staff House for HBMS, where a roommate owned a sail boat. ÒWhen you have a sail boat, you need a crew...and I was his crew.Ó And since then, Price has been involved and interested in the sailing scene. With a limit of 20 kids, Price says he is impressed with the turnout. ÒOnce we got the 20 I still had several inquiries,Ó he says. ÒPeople are excited about this and there is enthusiasm towards the club.Ó As the students were in their Vanguard Prams on Wednesday, Thursday and today for lessons, the big action takes place tomorrow with the first race getting set at 10 a.m. The team will consist of two boys and two girls from the NorMan Region. Aside from the Denare Beach session, the Manitoba Sailing Association was also in Sheridan and York Landing recruiting sailors. The Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games are to take place in Carmen this August. Students racing for the qualifying team this year are: Adrianne Markham Callum Tyson Cole Tyson David Loat Edward Gardner Eric Johnsgaard Jocelyn Tyson Kyver Foster Tyson Schanowski Callum Spencer Dylan Grove Esa Fernandes Isaac Dufour Jarvis Jarret Bowman MacKenzie Grove Sam Dufour Jarvis Shannah Fisher
