Participating in the Mother Daughter walk may save a woman's life. The event, put on by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, will be at Flinty's Walking Loop on Sunday, September 25. The organization is hoping 100 participants will raise $10,000 to combat heart disease. "This is for everyone," says Flin Flon Heart and Stroke Foundation program co-ordinator, Barb Corden. "We have had good response with people picking up pamphlets, but only three people have registered." Registration can be done the day of the event and participants 16 years and older are encouraged to raise a minimum of $20. Corden hopes for a good turnout, but she doesn't know what to expect. "It's good cardio and fun, plus you're raising money for a good cause," Corden emphasized. To help promote the walk, the Heart and Stroke Foundation has done an interview with CFAR, and placed posters throughout the area. Al Ross, manager for the Brandon and area, says a return of the Mother Daughter walk depends whether this year's piloted project is successful. Ross say he believes Flin Flon will be successful in reaching the goal. "Flin Flon is great in getting behind a cause," he says. "I know this." Ross stressed that he wants people to participate because heart disease and stroke affects everyone in one way or another. He added that people become unhealthy, especially younger people, because of an unhealthy diet, and from eating at fast food places and getting less exercise. "This is a great opportunity for them to take advantage of this fight against stroke," he added. The Foundation is even giving back to the community to encourage pledges, as prizes are being given for money raised. "I'm pretty excited about it," says Ross. "Brandon suggested Flin Flon be part of the walk because the Flinty Walk is a good setting." Registration, pledge drop-off and T-shirt pick up is at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, September 25.
