Submitted by Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada Spring in Manitoba has arrived and with it comes a season of renewed hope and vitality. It's time to put on this year's signature red t-shirt for the Manitoba Lotteries MS Walk. Taking place on Sunday, this year's Manitoba Lotteries MS Walk will be held at Elks Hall. In 2011, Flin Flon's Walk raised almost $8,000.ÊÊ This year, Walkers are encouraged to 'lace up for someone they love', which is something that rings true for Mordon's Top Fundraiser, 12 year old Erin Doherety. Erin was only four years old when she began walking in the Manitoba Lotteries MS Walk. Her connection with MS is a strong one _ her aunt lives with MS and Erin walks for her. Nine years later, Erin continues to participate with her sister Jenna, starting their fundraising in January. When winter is at its coldest, Erin is bundling up in her snowsuit and using a toboggan to go fundraising at the homes of her family and friends. 'The Walk is lots of fun, especially when we're walking in a big group of people or it's snowing or raining outside,' she says. When asked why she doesn't mind snow or rainy days, she replied 'When I'm walking in bad weather, it's not nearly as hard as it (is) for people with MS.'ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊ The Manitoba Lotteries MS Walk is truly a family oriented, community-supported event that makes a difference in the lives of Manitobans living with MS. It is the MS Society's largest pledge-based fundraiser, involving over 3,000 participants and volunteers in 10 communities across Manitoba. 'Exciting' 'It is a very exciting time to become involved with the MS Society,' says Wendy O'Malley, President of the MS Society. 'We know there can be a world without MS and we need you to help us achieve this vision.' So far, the MS Society has raised 66 per cent of its overall Walk fundraising total for 2012, but they need more Walkers in order to meet their goals. As MS Awareness continues throughout May, Manitobans are encouraged to get involved in this great fundraiser. For those who are already registered in this year's Walk, the MS Society invites them to get friends and family involved. Every day in Canada, three more people are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. The money raised through the Manitoba Lotteries MS Walk helps fund innovative programs and services for over 3,000 Manitobans living with MS and supports groundbreaking research dedicated to finding the cause and cure of MS.Ê
