Creighton held its first Walk for the Heart this past weekend. Fifteen walkers showed up to raise money and awareness. According to In Motion committee member Fran Labarre, who was also a walker, "for a first time event, in the middle of the summer when people are out at the lakes and cabins, it was a good turnout." Labarre also adds that "it was a good In Motion event." She was pleased with the turnout, but she says if everyone were to bring a friend next year, they could double their participation. "I know I'll be back and bringing a friend," she says. As far as Labarre could see, "everyone looked like they were having fun." And she adds, "everyone was there walking with someone, a friend or an acquaintance." As for after the walk, Labarre says "it was nice to visit with everyone, and there were some good prizes and a nice vegetable tray." Aside from the importance of the walk, Labarre says the nicest part was the lack of rain. "It was a rainy day, but it held out while we were walking," she says. The walk route, which is also known as the Creighton Loop, was a three-kilometer trek, which Labarre says "is a good start of a walk." To be healthy, a person is to walk 10,000 steps a day, or 8.8 kilometers, according to various health sources. The month of September is looking to be filled with different types of physically active fundraisers, including the Terry Fox Run and the Walk for Cerebral Palsy. Final numbers for the Walk for the Heart have not been tallied, but will be released upon arrival.
