Kelly Carrington Staff Writer For the second year in a row, athletes from Hapnot Collegiate have volleyed together for a good cause. Play for a Cure raises money through a fun volleyball tournament for the Canadian Cancer Society. Mikayla Gawiak started the event last year _ this year, Amber Klause took over the responsibilities. Through one day of volleyball and shirt sales, Hapnot was able to raise $2,700 for the Canadian Cancer Society. 'It went really well. I was was pleased with how it all came together and turned out,' said Klause. With one year behind the participants already, Klause said the event went 'very smoothly.' '...everyone kind of knew how it was going to work,' Klause said. Just shy of 30 volleyball players were on the court Dec. 8 _ including five teachers. A success once again, Klause says she hopes to see the event continue for years to come. 'It's a great way to raise money for a great cause,' she said. The competition was light on the floor as teams played one set in a round-robin fashion. The finals saw teams playing two sets _ with the winner earning bragging rights. 'There was a bit of competition, but it was more of a tournament to raise money, play volleyball and have fun,' Klause said. It was all fun and games _ though she admits there were 'some pretty sick dives and rallies.' Participants registered and collected pledges as well as purchased t-shirts from the event. Klause collected donations from local businesses to help bring the total to almost $3,000.
