Sandy Bay is the place to be if you love volleyball. This is the location for the 2005 Centennial Northern Volleyball Jamboree taking place Sept.16-18. The jamboree features a development camp for athletes in grades 7 to 12 and NCCP Level 1 coaches and officials clinic. What makes this event even more appealing is that it's free with funding provided by Saskatchewan Centennial 2005. Kathy McGrath, regional director for Neyanun Regional Recreation Authority, said the jamboree is no charge for participants because the province of Saskatchewan places athletic development as a priority. "The province likes to support sports programs geared for youth," she says. "It would be wise for kids and coaches to be involved." With the Saskatchewan Winter Games in Melfort on Feb.12-18, and the North American Indigenous Games in 2006 coming up, McGrath says this is a good chance to develop those skills. Roughly 100 youth with 15 coaches and officials are expected to participate. Tony Graham, who played on the men's Canadian Olympic team, will help with player development and he was present in Creighton during the 2004 jamboree. "We're very enthusiastic," McGrath says, about the upcoming jamboree. "It's a great opportunity." A fun tournament will wind-up the jamboree on Sunday so athletes can show off their improved skills.
