The Hapnot Collegiate Kopper Kweens senior varsity volleyball team had to settle for third, while their boys placed second at a tournament in Thompson. The results may have been different had neither team been missing key players. The Kopper Kweens lost their only playoff match to The Pas in straight sets. Co-coach Tiffany Anderson said the team played extremely well minus their three starters who were away for soccer provincials. In their place were Grade nine students, who Anderson said performed well. "Our court organization and communication was good and our court coverage was good," Anderson said. With Zones being held in Flin Flon Nov.17-18, Anderson said the team needs to work on shutting down the top hitters. Kopper Kings Competing without their setter, Chadd Ticzon, and a middle player, the Kings still managed to face their rival opponent Thompson in the tournament final. "They keyed in on our big hitters and picked on us," said Kings coach Craig McIntosh. "I was really happy with our guys we called to play." Those players McIntosh relied on had no previous experience playing the caliber of game they were in. Jason Fehr, who is the team's libero, did well according to McIntosh filling in for Chadd. Before the team hosts Zones, McIntosh intends to improve his teams blocking and middle attacks. "Our power game is fine," he said. "We'll use Baron (Charuk) and Scott (Vancoughnett) to counteract the double team on Evan Renard and Peter Weber. "Thompson has a competitive team," he continued. "Our outside game is stronger, and their middle is more effective." The last time Hapnot hosted Zones for volleyball four years ago, they won. "Do I think we can win? Absolutely," McIntosh said. "I wouldn't be coaching if I didn't think we could do it."
