The Flin Flon Lightning girls’ U-12 soccer team went undefeated in the Harder Avalon Classic Soccer Tournament to earn the gold in division three.
The girls were one of six teams from Flin Flon, three girls’ teams and three boys’, to compete in the June 5-7 tournament in Saskatoon. The Westman Football Club Rangers out of Brandon also included three Flin Flon boys.
On the road to gold, the Lightning earned a 3-0 victory over Aurora, a 8-2 win over SUSC, a 4-0 shutout over Eastside and a 3-1 semifinal win against Lakewood.
The girls took the gold with a 2-0 win over Lloydminster in the finals.
Flin Flon also sent two Fusion girls’ teams to the event, one in the under-14 age group and one in the under-16 group.
The U-14 team had a tough go with three losses, 5-0, 2-0 and 6-0, to end their weekend early.
The U-16 team started with a 1-0 loss before earning two wins in a row against Humboldt and Sandy Lake. The girls then posted a 1-0 loss to a team from Saskatoon.
The U-16 Fusion team placed third in its division.
Flin Flon Mutants U-12 boys’ team brought home silver in division two. The U-12 boys Kickers ended third their division.
The Mutants opened with a 2-1 loss against a Saskatoon team, then beat Kindersley 6-1 and Lloydminster 5-0. The boys went on to win the semifinals 6-2 against Lakewood Cyclones, but took a 3-2 loss to the Lakewood Tornadoes in the finals.
The Kickers started with a loss to Melfort, but redeemed themselves with a shutout against a Saskatoon team. The boys fell to Melfort 2-1 in the semifinals.
The Phantom Lake Lakers represented Flin Flon in the U-14 boys’ category. They started with a difficult 7-1 loss against Battleford, then notched a tie against Aurora. The boys’ final game of the tournament was a 8-3 win over SUSC. They did not advance to the playoffs.
Tayler Kittle, Nathan Whitbread and Isaac Dufour-Jarvis played with the Rangers, out of Brandon, and ended up with a silver medal in their division.
