Ann Wiebe and Geri Kostuchuk are golden gals. The two won the Golden Gals 2006 curling tournament held at the Uptown Curling Club from Nov. 28-29. For Wiebe this is the fourth consecutive year her team advances to the provincial championship. "It's always fun and the gals get to go to Manitou (Manitoba)," Wiebe said, after her A side victory. "They curled well." Despite competing against just three other teams, Wiebe found Kostuchuk's rink to be their toughest challenger. While she helped lead her team to victory, Wiebe won't join the golden gals as she avoids the winter coldness for the warm temperatures down under in Australia for three months. "It's disappointing that I can't go," she said. "I do love curling. It's not easy. I choose the warm weather over cold." Sheila Adams takes over as skip for a team that also has Ann Hardy, Karin Hanson and Gail Baker. The team made it through the modified double knock-out undefeated to take first place. Kostuchuk's B side winners are Rita Chute, Fern Kozak, and Irene Kozar. Kostuchuk said her team had a great time during the tournament and felt the curling was good. While having the chance to play against teams they've seen before, Kostuchuk hopes to bring a provincial championship home. "Nobody from Flin Flon has won yet. We will try and do our best," Kostuchuk said. So what's the important thing to do to win? "I don't know," Kostuchuk replied, with a laugh. "We don't really practice, that's the problem." She said the most important thing about going to provincials is meeting the people and the challenge of the game. The other teams that participated in the Golden Gals 2006 tourney were Irene Johnston's team of Leone Lundgren, Betty Fehr and Yvonne Davis along with Ann Henry's team of Evelyn Meyer, Nellie Jebson and Phyllis Mackenzie. Wiebe and Kostuchuk's teams will head to Manitou for provincials Feb.11-15, 2007.
