The Flin Flon Bombers exploded for 14 goals over the weekend to earn a pair of victories on home ice.
On Friday, Feb. 5 the Bombers downed Humboldt 8-2. They ousted Kindersley 6-3 the next night.
“We are finding ways to win when we are not playing our best hockey,” Bombers head coach and general manager Mike Reagan said.
Against Humboldt on Friday, Flin Flon took a 4-1 lead in the first period and led 5-2 at the end of the second. Mitch Foyle had two goals and two assists while his regular linemate, Brandon Lesko, had a goal and three assists.
“That whole line was spectacular,” said Reagan of Lesko, Foyle and Nick Shumlanski. “They just seem to be growing more confident as the year has gone on. … They provide us with a lot of energy.”
Against Kindersley on Saturday, Joel Kocur had a hat trick. Linemate Brandon Switzer recorded a goal and three assists, while fellow linemate Alex Smith had four assists.
In the third period, with the Bombers ahead 5-1, the team decided to settle a score against Klippers forward Dexter Bricker, who they felt had taken liberties against their players. The transgressions included a hit from behind on Smith earlier in the contest.
Adam Wilson fought Bricker and collected 19 penalty minutes. That gave Kindersley a long power play, on which the Klippers scored.
However, the Bombers earned the victory with Brenden Newton making 33 saves.
“To me if you are going to play that way and take some cheap shots, you got to pay the piper,” Reagan said.
Heading into Tuesday’s games, Smith led the SJHL with 77 points in 48 games.
The Bombers were in Yorkton on Tuesday, after The Reminder went to press, and are in Melville tonight, Wednesday. They return to the Whitney on Saturday to host Melfort.
